Hey everyone!
Happy New Year! As you probably already know, 2 episodes of
The Secret Adventures of
Jules Verne have
already aired on SciFi. For those of you that don't, it comes on Fridays
at 10pm/9 central.
I'd like to
address a couple of things that have been mentioned on the SciFi
bulletin board. For one, yes, I do read the board daily. I enjoy hearing
what the fans have to say, both good and bad. Sometimes your harshest
critics can be your best teachers. I have not posted on this board due
to the fact that I am afraid no one would believe me when I say who I
am, or that if I posted anonymously, I would be "accused" of being Gavin
Scott, the creator of the series. A good friend of ours, Jonathan
Walker, just went through this same scenario, and I am deeply saddened
by his decision to no longer post on the board. Jonathan is an
intelligent guy and a wonderful individual and I appreciated the fact
that he took up for the show and helped explain away the confusion from
SciFi's decision to not air the first episode first.
Speaking of
that, yes, I am aware of the mass confusion about the show's plot due to
the fact that SciFi chose to air the 2nd episode as the season opener,
instead of the intended season opener. So many of everyone's questions
would have been answered (i.e. How the League discovered Jules'
drawings, how Phileas met Passpartout and acquired the Aurora, the
relationship between Phileas and Rebecca, the reason why Phileas left
the Secret Service, the introduction of the characters of Chatsworth and
Count Gregory and much more) had the appropriate episode aired. This is
by no means a criticism of the SciFi Channel -- I think they are a
perfect network for the show and am happy with the support they have
given the show.
The other query I would like to address is why
Jules does not speak with a French accent. This was never allowed to be
my decision. I thought it would be very enjoyable to do a French accent
through the course of the show. The producers told me that under no
circumstances should I speak with a French accent. They stated that to
sell to an American audience, it was crucial to keep my American accent.
I know some people on the board do not agree with that, but my hands
were tied. In my career, I have always sought challenges, but in this
case it was not meant to be. As someone said on the board, if we really
wanted to be technical about it, Jules wouldn't speak with a French
accent at all- he'd only speak French and there would have to be
subtitles. Looks like his only friend would have been Passpartout
:)
I think I should
say finally, some people have questioned Jules' demeanor as "wimpy"
and/or "whiny." I believe one person even said "90 pound weakling."
These are all fair comments. However, my plan for the character of Jules
was to develop him in both confidence and strength as the season
progressed. I believe, as the season goes on, this character arc will
become more and more obvious. When we meet Jules, after all, he is only
a writer. I thought it would be pretty fake to depict him as this macho
and robust character to start off with. I don't know about any of you,
but I would be pretty afraid as well, if someone appeared in my bedroom
window and started throwing me around (Jules was also supposed to be
drunk, after a night carousing with his friends in his favorite cafe). I
felt like I had some very big shoes to fill playing Jules -- and I felt
it to be a dishonor not to give his character any room to grow during
the season. And, more accurately, boring for the viewer if Jules never
changed at all.
Hopefully this has addressed some questions and
problems that some have with show. I encourage them to give the show a
chance. I feel confident that they may come to enjoy it. If not, thanks
for at least giving it a shot. It is my sincere hope, that the positive
reviews keep coming in- it was an honor to portray Jules and I hope for
the chance to do so for many more seasons.
Wishing everyone a
prosperous, healthy New Year --
